Friends are there to make our lives beautiful and they definitely are a gift from God. However, we should always be careful of whom we allow into our lives because some people you trusted will leave you broken when you least expected it and when you needed them the most.
I once listened to Bishop T.D Jake's preaching on friendship and I found it interesting. I am going to share a few points below. There are 3 types of friends:
1. Confidants They aren't many of them. They are in your life for you. They love you for who you are and always there for you. Confidants understand you more than anyone else could. Whatever you share with them about your life is safe with them. If you have a few of these you are blessed. Jesus had 3 of these.
2. Constituents They come into your life for what you are about. They have been drawn to you because you share similar goals. They are not there for you but they are there for where you are going. If they find a faster car they will leave you. They leave you when you least expect it. You will be hurt because they were not attracted to you in the first place.
3. Comrades They are not for you and they are not for what you are for. They are with you because they are against what you are against. People fall in love with comrades because of a common cause for example they may fall in love because they are both going through divorce or because they are both grieving. When the situation is over, you will have nothing in common anymore. If you don't work on the relationship outside the conflict, when the conflict is over, you won't feel the need for each other anymore.
We all have these 3 types of friends in our lives. You need the wisdom of God for you to be able to identify who is who so that you don't mix them all up.
